Translation is more of an art than a science. As a general rule, when naming a given kind of person in a given language, I try to guess what name would be used by native speakers of that language to refer to that kind of person. If a word turns out to be inappropriate, please let me know and I'll adjust the translation accordingly. (As I did with the word Slidar.)

There's not quite that much magic to it, I just try to make reasonable guesses. If a kind of person, or a kind of thing, seems similar to something you have a word for, I'll often use that word to try to help make things easier to understand.

Aranea are called spiders because that's what you call the Little Sisters in your world.
I don't know where the word aranea comes from, it's just a word for people spiders.
I think maybe the word vashneesht comes from the swooshy sound when they move?

HIVERs are called HIVERs because we are thought to have been created by the Great Queen in time immemorial from primitive group-living insects who organized themselves in 'hives' by simple instinct.

There are clear fossil records across many planets of an ancient civilization predating current times by approximately 900 million years. Nobody knows why they disappeared or where they went, but it is commonly believed that HIVERs were fashioned from insects by these precursors.

Familiars are called that because the first "animals with human minds" that witches made had the souls of dead relatives, the standard ritual was changed¹ but the term was kept.
¹Because it is too cruel to subject a soul to the relevant re-registration forms.
