Better than what I was expecting. Unless bringing back a hiver is a trivial effort? what happens with a unused memory crystal? To be reborn, a Princess or Queen must ritually consume your memory crystal during ovulation. There are only so many Princesses and Queens. I would estimate 5-10% of HIVERs are reborn. Why only 5-10%? Even with a limited number of Princess/Queens it would only take time until everyone is reborn. Unused memory crystals are a rare delicacy. Consuming them imparts some fraction of the owner's skills and experiences, even in non-Royals. That sounds vaguely cannibalistic.

Apparently "HIVERs" are run by a lot of damn fools (pardon my french) who want to take people who are practically elements and turn them into basically humans. And they panic if this is mentioned. I suspect this makes me as uncomfortable as it makes you, if not more, but this is so far outside of my job description I wouldn't know where to begin.

Some are criminals. And rebirth is said to be a difficult, resource-intensive, time-consuming, error-prone process. At least a third of those attempted to be reborn fail, and the crystal dissolves, creating a new person with some old skills and memories instead of an old person in a new body. Actually, having your memory crystal consumed is better than not. It means some small part of you lives on. Deliberate destruction of crystals is the most severe capital punishment.

There are humans and humanoid animal-people, who are fundamentally alike, aside from minor differences in culture and form. There are animal-people, who look like animals that are not people, most but not all of whom can talk or use magic. There are people who are more abstract and unlike animals. In general, the more unlike a humanoid animal a person is, the more likely they are to have magic, to exist with different abilities and needs, and to be bound by different rules.

There's me, and the AGIs. I think there are supposed to be other humans somewhere. Mom says that there used to be more kinds of people, trees and rocks and stuff near wherever lots of people had lived for a while, and humans who could do more magic.

I'm human! We have not yet found any other intelligent life, despite things like SETI. I'm on an Earth! Apparently Earth is a common place to be from around here?
Heroes don't count as a separate species, as far as I'm aware, but they have superhero powers (or magical powers, whatever). I'm not sure there's been a huge amount of research into the technical difference between them – we can produce children with humans and we don't have any huge physical changes, so, probably the same species. It'd be weird if we suddenly turned out not to be, just because of superhero powers.

Well, you at least have found nonhuman intelligent life. Earth is a common place to be from, both for forum members and for humans in the Unknown. Are the children of heroes and non-hero humans more likely to Turn or otherwise receive magic?

We don't actually know yet – it doesn't seem to be the case between people who have kids, one Turns, and then you look at those kids, but it's only been like three years (so we don't exactly have a huge sample; most people who Turn are between the ages of 18 and 25 and so not that many actually have kids) and maybe the weird component can only be hereditary after you Turn or something weird like that.

My world natively has humans, witches, and panserbjørne. There is some theological disagreement about whether witches count as human, because they are all female, unaging, work witchcraft, and fly on branches, but they have children with humans. Panserbjørne are giant armored bear people with opposable thumbs. They don't have souls, but they're clearly intelligent.
There are also rumors of other intelligent species in the far north, and I've found several intelligent or possibly intelligent nonhuman species in Cascadia, but I believe they are not originally from this world.

Dearest Journey to Knowledge,
Are Panserbjørne self-willed? Do they choose for themselves, or rely upon instincts? My world has a kind of people without souls who could use the ability to resist their most primal urges.

Jasmine,
Yes, panserbjørne are people, they make decisions and craft tools, and trade or go to war as a civilization.
From what I've read, they're cold and don't express many emotions, and do not lie. I think they're able to resist their instincts, or they have such strange instincts that they aren't noticeable.

gnomes : (If you're willing to answer, otherwise feel free to ignore me) There are gnomes in my world as well. Gnomes in my world are about ten to eighteen inches tall, and all have beards and wear pointed hats, and I am fairly sure they are originally from another world! What are you like? Are there many of you sharing a single account?

WE GNOMES CAN GET UP TO NINET- NO, THERE IS ONE OF US WHO IS TWENTY-TWO INCHES TALL. BEARDS ARE SOMEWHAT COMMON BUT NOT UNIVERSAL. WE CAN WEAR ANY TYPES OF HAT, AND HAVE INDIVIDUAL PREFERENCES ON SHAPE, BUT WE PREFER RED HATS ON AVERAGE. WHAT IS AN "ACCOUNT"?
