As I was saying, I am a squid-person, so you should probably pay more attention to nonhumanoids in the future?

Some things talk that aren't people, and some things don't talk that are. In my experience it is better to err on the side of assuming someone or something is a person than the alternative, because being wrong is causes less problems that way. Paying attention is also generally advised -- if your food is not acting persony, Novelty, then you are likely to be fine, but it may be worth asking someone to check for you, to be sure.

Where I'm living right now, I'm not catching my own food, so I'm not sure there's much I can do about it if there are problems with this. I'll try, though.
Novelty: I'd like to visit you, to see how obvious it is that you're a person - I feel like if I've made a mistake with other spiders, I should do something about it, even though I'm not sure what, so I'd like to check. I can get there on my own, but only if there's someplace safe for me to stay for about an hour, without anything interrupting me, so that I can do the magic to get back here. I can look at some lizards while I'm there, too, if you'd like me to.

Well there aren't any intelligent insects or spiders here, it would be really hard to awaken them because they don't really even have brains the same way mammals and reptiles and things do, they are too small and different. So you'd have to make the magic do all the work forever. Or just make them a lot bigger, but then you run into problems because the body structure is not right for them to be that big. I think the smallest awakened animals are rats, and even regular rats are deceptively intelligent already.
But I guess different worlds have different rules, how big are you, Novelty?

It is possible to pack a surprising amount of processing capability into a small space although I suppose you may not have that technology, Singer.
Most insects in Eclipse are still small enough that you would need a swarm to run a mind, though, at least without further miniaturization.

I'm about as long as two big small rats without their tails.
Okay you can visit me, lurkingkobold! My place should be safe to stay for a little while. We can go look for a lizard, but sometimes it takes a while to find one, especially if you don't want to go in the Cave of Big Things. You can learn about aranea and I can learn about kobolds!

Okay, thank you!
I'll be there in a little while, I want to pack a few things first.

I'm back!
Novelty is obviously a person and very cute. I'm still going to go look at my home world's spiders again, though, just to make sure.
Novelty's usual way of telling who's a person didn't think I was - they talk by magic, and that's what they had been looking for - but at least some of the things they eat aren't people, and I explained to them how to tell. They should be okay, and I can go back if they have any questions.

I'm glad to hear that you are probably not eating people.
