lurkingkobold, did something happen? There's a lot more 'I' and 'we' and much less 'is of' in your posts than usual. Or has Mother Starlight improved the translation algorithms?

No, it wasn't Mother Starlight. Some magic happened to me, and part of it taught me about language, which was pretty surprising. The rest of it is cool though.

There was a magic thing on my world that taught me how to turn invisible and make things invisible, first. I'm pretty sure it's not the thing you're going to think about when you hear this; it was Rainbow God's idea.
Also when that happened I got a bunch of MP; we think that me sleeping with Comprehend Language cast on me is what taught me the language stuff.

Lurking kobold, how come you had trouble with language before? Is a kobold a kind of animal that somebody tried to awaken but didn't do it properly? People shouldn't try to do that kind of magic if they don't know what they are doing. It's really finicky stuff.

Most kobolds don't talk; we're people anyway. I learned to speak from some tigerpeople when I was little, but it's hard to learn a whole language when you don't get to talk to people very often, so I wasn't very good at it, but I was never an animal.

Lurkingkobold: Given the timing, I find this rather concerning, for the reasons you mentioned. ... Meletiti Entelecheiai, esthfora, do either of you have anything to say here? (if a certain person wants to answer by private message or off the forums, that is also fine) Singer: ...what?

Branch asked for some advice about what the kobold should do, and I told them to go to the cave where the magic was because it was the best way. It didn't have anything to do with the things from your world at all.

I should probably clarify at this point that I do believe awakened animals are people, which is why I worry about that kind of thing being done improperly and leaving the resulting people with problems. Sometimes if the magic is not done right, the awakened have trouble learning languages properly even if they are exposed a lot because their mental architecture doesn't really support it.

It's all right, Singer. Lots of people on my world don't think kobolds are people, and we mostly do okay; I wasn't upset.

It's weird to find out about an entire race of people who do not use language at all, so I can see how it might make it hard for other people to tell, but there's other ways to tell that a person is a person. Do they just not care to pay attention?

Sometimes, yeah. Kobold tribes go to a lot of trouble to stay away from other kinds of people, though, so a lot of the time they don't really have a chance to see.

But if they don't talk, how can you tell what are people? Oh no, are lizards people?! What if all my food is people? :::

Um.
Well, you can tell by watching what they do, to see if they're acting like people, mostly. It's usually pretty obvious if you're paying attention.
I'm, uh, not quite sure I've ever paid that much attention to a spider, though.

Well, I'm a giant squid and I'm definitely a person. So maybe you should pay more attention to nonhumanoids in future?
